Robert’s Dairy

Today we had to say goodbye to all the beautiful sailing ships that visited San Juan for ten days. I was there with my twin brother, Mark. My little sister Jenny was there too. It was sad seeing them all go after talking and sharing with some of the sailors. I was lucky to climb on some of the ships, like the “Gloria” from Colombia, the “Cisne Blanco, from Brazil, the “Guayas” from Ecuador, and the “Simón Bolívar” from Venezuela. Among all, I will never forget the biggest vessel, the “Esmeralda” from Chile. It’s four enormous masts really made me hold my breath for minutes, and their sailors were very friendly too. They invited me to a cup of tea and gave us pins to wear. I was very happy to be able to talk with them a little. They talked about Chile, but they were all enchanted with Puerto Rico and our hospitality. I think I had mixed emotions when I saw them leave. After all, a regatta is a long race. I’m sure they would like to get home when it’s over.
